Living Life to the Full course for youth available at no cost in BC
Adolescence is a high-risk time for mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and stress. The Canadian Mental Health Association’s Living Life to the Full course is a face-to-face course designed to help people deal with everyday life’s challenges by learning helpful skills using cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) principles. It was developed for adults by an international expert and adapted for Canadian youth by youth in 2014.
In 8 playful weekly 1.5-hour sessions, the course covers topics such as combatting low mood and isolation, problem-solving, healthy thinking, managing anger and anxiety, and boosting self-esteem. This evidence-based program has been proven to increase well-being and resilience to prevent mental health problems. The vast majority of BC youth who took part of the pilot reported favourable outcomes. Research trials with adults have shown participants show improved mood and anxiety months after the course is over. To hear why youth like the course, in their own words, see our 5-minute video here .
The course is an example of a “social and emotional learning” curriculum: the group format teaches skills to help youth manage negative emotions and develop healthier coping techniques and builds social supports at the same time.
The Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division (CMHA BC) holds the exclusive licence to the program in Canada and has recently received a grant to offer 18 courses for youth in 6 BC communities over 3 years. Motivated settings increase the success and sustainability of the program.
If you would like to bring the course to youth in your community between Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 (schools and other youth settings are welcome to apply), please click on the link below by July 14, 2018:
By filling the form, your organization will have a chance to receive 3 free courses (total value $7,500) that could reach 45 youth over 3 years. If you are successful, you will be partnered with your local CMHA branch as the course is delivered by a licensed trained facilitator. If there is no CMHA branch nearby, we still invite you to apply as we will consider training your own staff if they meet some requirements.
Good luck !
